OLD NAMES
What's behind some old and sometimes forgotten pottery names of  Stoke on Trent

Mention Stoke on Trent to anyone who is not from the area and you will quickly find out that that they associate pottery with the area. "Pottery, the Potters, and Five Towns" are all inextricably linked to the area and it is likely that Stoke on Trent will go down in history as one of the worlds best pottery manufacturing areas of the world.

The industry of recent times has had it's problems - like most manufacturing in the UK - there are really cheap (and nasty) products filtering in from the far east, the high pound did not help ANY industry and of course there was a general move away from china from the populations of the world.

The solutions to stay in business within the pottery industry are simple (and nothing to do with management as one local character insisted). Firstly, have a product that customers want with excellent quality, secondly, price the product competitively and lastly, make sure it's available off the shelf. Innovative pottery is ALWAYS in demand - just ask Moorcroft PLC - perhaps there is a lesson to be learned about their marketing techniques

With new techniques in manufacturing of pottery innovative products can be made and (we are sure) will be made in Stoke on Trent well in to this new millennium and beyond - so take a look at what has gone before and look forward with relish at what is to come.
